The Chronicles of Ademar

Costume Design: Emperor Ademar

February 22nd, 2010

A quick look at Emperor Ademar’s royal costume. I wanted his clothing to include some sort of representation of the society’s embrace of nature — much like how the castle itself is a monument to this same idea — so after toying around with a few concepts, I decided to incorporate live greenery into his clothing.

Ademar has vinework that begins just below his tail and twists completely around his body, spiraling upwards and reaching towards his right shoulder. His crown is also a living accessory, with the branches and leaves’ looking similar to antlers. All of these elements bring a sense of life and fertility (of the land, specifically) to his appearance.

Facial Sketches: Emperor Ademar

February 1st, 2010

Here are some quick facial expressions for Emperor Ademar, showing a bit of the range of emotions he can go through. These pages are always fun to do since they really help you get a better feel for the character’s personality in a short amount of time. I plan on doing a few pages’ worth of expressions for each character in the book.

Character Design: “Sullivan”

January 10th, 2010

Here are some quick production sketches for a character that will be featured in the opening scene of the first issue. He is a petty thief who is being dragged into his first attempted assassination. As you can tell from these sketches, he’s not exactly confident in his abilities.

Final images of this character in ink wash and watercolors will be posted as the pages are completed.

Links

August 28th, 2008

Links is a character shrouded in mystery. All that is known about him is that he is a deadly ghost of a creature. According to most of the folk in the kingdom, he is a mythical creature: he exists only in campfire stories. He has a unique condition that causes his flesh to melt from his body, so he will be seen in both forms shown below.

Buckley

August 28th, 2008

Buckley is the secondary bodyguard to the Ademar royalty and Lily’s fighting partner. Her past is shrouded in mystery, but she is proving herself as a loyal fighter and a solid backup to Lily, who doesn’t think very fondly of her as she was the first outside of Lily’s family to be sworn in as a royal bodyguard. Unlike Lily, Buckley is a bit wreckless and cocky as a fighter, often flaunting her skills as a marksman. Her primary weapons are a longbow and crossbow pistol, with a broadsword for backup melee combat.

Buckley is one of several main characters of the book. The majority of the plot will involve her in some fashion.

Lily

August 28th, 2008

Lily is the personal bodyguard to the Ademar royalty. Just like her father before her, she has sworn her life to the protection of the Emperor and Prince. Although she is still young — the youngest to assume the role, in fact — she has a surprising level of bravery and dedication. Her weapons of choice are a pair of samurai-style blades. Because her father was a panda guard and her mother a maid worker, she was born and raised in the castle, so she sees all of its inhabitants as her family; the maids are her sisters and the guards her brothers.
